Internet of Things (IoT) - Security,Privacy,Safety - The Information Playground Overview for Part 22:
|
BASIL Networks has several projects on-going in addition to this blog series. Since this blog presented a series on Wave Phenomenon, Antennas and Radiation a bit over a year now, we decided to share the data acquisition setup for some of the data collected here in the Tucson Arizona lab. Back in December 2020, a circuit composed of a series of sensitive linear magnetic field sensors and a 16-bit DAQ system was used to collect magnetic field changes as the two largest planets in our solar system, Jupiter and Saturn, went through the "great conjunction" event in 2020. A terabyte of data was collected over a six-day span on either side of the planetary alignment date of December 21, 2020. A little bit about the data collection and data acquisition circuit detail notes: Four analog inputs are used for data collection, three for the sensors and one for the power supply powering the sensors. The sensors used in the research experiment are a continuous frequency linear directional magnetic field sensor with a full-scale range of +/-1 milliTesla. When connected to the DAQ the sensors are capable of resolving in the 30 nanoTesla range using a 16-bit ADC. The measurement of the average Earth's magnetic field in the data acquisition lab is in the 50 microTesla range, which provides an adequate resolution to measure any effects of the planetary alignment on Earth, which was the intent. Data from four analog input channels was collected using three linear magnetic sensors (X, -X, and Z magnetic axes), and one additional channel used for the power source reference. The data collection rate was fixed at 250K SPS (Samples Per Second) per channel, grouped at one microsecond intervals, running continuously for 6 days, collecting about a terabyte of data. The linear directional single axis sensors allow a unique base line using two linear sensors that are set directional North to South and South to North that should cancel out giving a simple noise base line, along with the third directional sensor set orthogonally East to West for computational magnitude variations. There are also other markers, that are timed in the lab during the data collection, that will be included with the publication. Data analysis is the next step in the process, since special analytical programs need to be written to extract the types of data of interest, which will be published upcoming blog series releases. There is still a lot more work to be done in the next year to get ready for the upcoming planetary alignments in 2023 and 2024. This should be enough time to look at other sensors that may provide more sensitivity, if needed, along with other additional sensors that have less sensitivity and offer a greater range in order to collect a full range of data of the actual phenomenon. OK, all for now - we will keep you up to date as we move forward with the projects |

Privacy, Security, Control and Safety In a Tracking World
These questions and many more will be answered as we continue our featured design blog
Breaches happen every day now and IoT devices are continually being hacked to access networks even from fish tanks controllers (yes, that really happened). GDPR has been implemented and we now read about huge fines levied on corporations for breaches even when all the compliance's are implemented.
Many individuals in the security arena are aware of the many vulnerabilities with hardware devices connected to the Internet, and remember,
"the cloud" core is hardware and software located in Galaxy far-far away There are three main root causes of breaches, hardware, software and of course human, which appear to fall in that order regardless of the application of innovation to breach the system. For hardware and software it becomes a matter of understanding the internals of the actual design, which for many if not all users depend on the integrity of the products designers integrating security to protect their on-line presence however, this is not a guarantee it exists. The series also presents the component supply chain security issues and the new current issues of Design software as the many Merges and Acquisitions take place and licenses are transferred and cancelled. The updating software for chip manufacturers of embedded and programmable devices have caused havoc in the industry. Parts 19 through 22 cover some of these issues M&A's accountability and what is to be expected. So, how do we address these vulnerabilities and security issues? By addressing what the ideal security methodology would be, which is, "a security methodology that you show how the internals work, demonstrate the methodology by application and still are unable to breach the methodology." These and other questions are addressed in this comprehensive educational series that takes you through a complete product design development process and more as follows:
Introduction - Setting the Atmosphere BASIL Networks Product Development and Education Blog Series:
IoT Core Platform Development Project These series apply to both management and technologists. Managements understanding of the development issues when implementing security, privacy and safety allows them to make better decisions during project development and for the technologist designing this is both a great review for the seasoned designer and a great foundation for the new technologist to the IoT arena.
OK - What is the advantage of these development and educational series?
The Wavelength, Radiation & Antennas series was created to give a solid understanding of the wireless communications arena and the safety and security practices of wireless communications. The Core IoT Platform Development series was created to give you the answers, methods and most of all the actual Core IoT Platform hardware that is Modular easy to customize for any application because it was designed and developed using MDM (Modular Design Methodology. When you sign up you are automatically entered in our drawing to win the complete hardware / software OS / firmware development system for the Core IoT Platform, or the "Interactive Project Development System" or the Interactive BUS Protocol Development System Software. At the end of the series we will randomly select the winners for several of the drawings.
